E: Küntay Evren’s interview published in the July issue of Harper’s Bazaar Türkiye explores the origins of his doodle practice, his creative instincts, the position of art in the digital age, and the role of artificial intelligence in creative processes. Evren explains how his childhood state of daydreaming and difficulty in focusing transformed into lines over time, describing doodling not merely as a visual style, but as a way of thinking.

Interview Text / Röportaj Metni

E:  Is doodling a spontaneous movement for you, or is it a system constructed by your subconscious? Answer: First of all, this is a truly multi-layered question. Since my childhood, I have been someone who struggled with focusing. Sitting still for a long time, listening, or staying in a single spot was not easy for me. There was a constant energy inside me that wanted to move. My body was sitting in the classroom, but my mind refused to stop. I transformed this forced state of stillness into movement within my mind. It is still the same today. When my mind wants to overflow, I draw. For me, doodling is not just a style; it is a way of thinking. Some call it the "jazz" state of art. If I am playing jazz, I do it spontaneously. But that seemingly spontaneous thing is actually the order of the lonely, vast universe inside me.

E: Do you define yourself within a specific discipline? Answer: I have been drawing with the exact same impulse since my childhood. This is an instinctive movement rather than a learned technique. I learned the strategic side of advertising. In other words, I learned to structure my instinctive art production with design knowledge. The foundation of what I do today is this: I combine my talent with my education. I bring the impulse together with the system. I enjoy intersecting the world I create with different disciplines such as design, branding, and digital production.

E:  How do you decide in what form an idea will manifest itself? Answer: Daydreaming has been my escape zone since childhood. Later, I received art education, worked in agencies, and produced at a very high pace. This intensity developed a decision-making muscle in my mind. Now, I feel like I don't choose the form anymore. The idea tells me its own form.

E: Which one is more real today: an artwork encountered in a physical space, or a digital image? Answer: For me, reality is that which is experienced. In order for me to evaluate a work, I need to see it, to encounter it. Whether it is a physical space or digital remains secondary. Reality is in the exact moment you make contact.

E: Is preserving digital artworks harder compared to physical ones? Answer: Artworks in a museum can be destroyed in an earthquake or a tsunami. Similarly, a global digital crisis could wipe out servers. Being physical or digital does not make it absolutely secure. The issue of preservation is somewhat related to which system humanity can sustain. The future will show us.

E:  Do you use artificial intelligence? Will the role of the artist change? Answer: I view artificial intelligence just like the design software that emerged in the past. Just as Photoshop and Illustrator are tools, AI is simply a new tool. Yes, I use it. Because it provides speed and alternatives in production processes. But let me state this clearly: Art is made by the artist. Soul, accumulated knowledge, lived experiences, stories... Without these, what emerges is merely an output. The tool changes. But the human remains the one who instills the meaning.

E:  What does heritage mean in art? Answer: Artistic legacy is somewhat a desire for immortality. Leaving a trace for the future. Leaving a map about the time and space you lived in. It is an aesthetic way of saying, "I was here."

8. Yapay zekâ kültürel mirası dönüştürür mü?

T: Yapay zekâyı bir asistan olarak görüyorum. Onu kültürel mirasa dönüştürecek olan yine bilgisayarın arkasındaki insandır. Bugün için estetik hafızayı oluşturan hâlâ insan.

E: Will artificial intelligence transform cultural heritage? Answer: I see artificial intelligence as an assistant. The one who will transform it into cultural heritage is, again, the human behind the computer. As of today, it is still the human who shapes the aesthetic memory.

E:  Can works produced with artificial intelligence withstand the test of time? Answer: For something to be considered an artwork, there must be a cause-and-effect relationship, a life story, and an emotional intensity behind it. Many visually pleasing images generated in programs today are just a "tool output." They might be beautiful, but they do not generate meaning on their own. What withstands time is not the technique, but the meaning.

10. Kalıcılığı belirleyen materyal mi, hafızadaki yeri mi?

T: İnsan mağara duvarlarına resim çizdiğinde aslında bir şeyi sonraki nesillere aktarmaya çalışıyordu. Sanat orada başladı: anlam bırakma ihtiyacıyla. Biz şu an dijital sanat çağının içindeyiz.

E:  Is permanence determined by the material or by its place in memory? Answer: When humans drew on cave walls, they were actually trying to transmit something to future generations. Art started right there: with the need to leave meaning behind. We are currently in the era of digital art. But because we are right in the middle of it, we cannot see it clearly. No one can predict the future with absolute certainty. But of this I am sure: we are in a major transition period right now. There is chaos, there is uncertainty. Yet, it is a highly exciting time for creation.
